Reasons for Breast Implant Removal

Roughly 80% of women undergoing breast augmentation or reconstruction opt for silicone gel implants. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) lifted restrictions on silicone implants in 2006, and has since approved five devices for sale, including:

Breast implants, whether silicone or saline, are not designed to last forever. In fact, 20% of women will choose to have their implants removed within 8 to 10 years of their initial breast surgery. The longer the implants are in place, the more likely it is that localized complications will eventually necessitate revision surgery. Some of the most common reasons for breast implant removal include:

• Rupture or leakage
• Desire bigger or smaller implants
• Capsular contracture
• Rippling or wrinkling
• Extrusion
• Migration
• Deflation

In September 2016, a Seattle woman filed suit against Mentor Worldwide in San Francisco federal court, after her doctors recommended that she undergo removal of her MemoryGel silicone implants. Her complaint charges that the implants she received were defective, and allowed chemicals used in their manufacture to bleed from the devices. Breast implant removal was recommended after tests detected high levels of heavy metals in her blood and she was diagnosed with silicone toxicity.

A second woman filed suit against Mentor just a few months later after suffering muscle pain, nausea, extreme fatigue and other serious health problems, all allegedly related to leaking silicone from MemoryGel implants. Her complaint, which is pending in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that Mentor never conducted proper testing to ensure the safety of its silicone breast implants, even though the FDA directed that it do so. Most disturbingly, the lawsuit contends that thousands of women who received Mentor’s silicone implants may be at risk for similar complications.
