Neocate Bone Disorders

Neocate Formula products are made from individual amino acids, the building blocks of protein. They are designed to be hypoallergenic and easy to digest for infants and children who suffer from:

  • Cow milk allergy
  • Soy allergy
  • Multiple food protein intolerance (MFPI)
  • Food-allergy-associated conditions, such as GERD or Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Short bowel syndrome
  • Malabsorption
  • Other GI disorders

The Neocate Formula line includes products for both infants and children, including:

  • Neocate Syneo Infant (0-12 months)
  • Neocate Infant DHA/ARA (0-12 months)
  • Neocate Nutra (6+ months)
  • Neocate Junior (1+ Years)
  • Neocate Junior Probiotic (1+ Years)
  • Neocate Splash (1+ Years)
  • EO28 Splash (1+ Years

In April 2017, a study published in the medical journal Bone raised concern that infants and children given Neocate Formula might be at risk for serious bone disorders, including rickets, hypophosphatemia, and unexplained bone fractures. The study involved 51 children, all of whom had been diagnosed with low phosphate levels. Skeletal radiographs demonstrated fractures, undermineralization, or rickets in 94% of the cases.

Many study subjects had been fed only Neocate for variable periods of time prior to their presentation. They all improved after following the introduction of supplemental phosphate or a different formula product.

The company that markets Neocate Formula cites this study on its U.K. website and advises that children fed these products “require regular monitoring and review and follow up is essential to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.”
